Elegant Chaos: Algebraically Simple Chaotic Flows

World Scientific Publishing Company | 2010 | ISBN: 9812838813 | 304 pages | PDF | 18,3 MB
This heavily illustrated book collects in one source most of the mathematically simple systems of differential equations whose solutions are chaotic. It includes the historically important systems of van der Pol, Duffing, Ueda, Lorenz, RA¶ssler, and many others, but it goes on to show that there are many other systems that are simpler and more elegant. Many of these systems have been only recently discovered and are not widely known. Most cases include plots of the attractor and calculations of the spectra of Lyapunov exponents. Some important cases include graphs showing the route to chaos. The book includes many cases not previously published as well as examples of simple electronic circuits that exhibit chaos.

The Inverted Bowl: Introductory Accounts of the Universe and Its Life

The present well-established study of planets orbiting stars other than our Sun, the exoplanets, was reviewed by the author in his earlier book Wandering Stars. This new and exciting field of study has expanded quickly, particularly due to technological advances in both Earth-based telescopes and, more recently, in the application of automatic space vehicles. Well over 300 exoplanets have now been catalogued, each of mass comparable to or greater than those of the major planets of the Solar System. Earth-sized bodies remain out of reach for the present. The data obtained so far show that the distribution of major planets in our Solar System is the exception rather than the rule, contrary to earlier expectations. A few exoplanet systems do, nevertheless, give the promise of broadly Solar System conditions with the possibility of Earth-like components in appropriate orbits.

During the brief history of GSM mobile phones, the line widths of silicon technologies used for their implementa- tion have decreased from 0.8µm in the mid 1990s to around 0.13µm in the early 21st century. In a typical phone, a basic voice call is fully executed in the baseband signal processing part, making it a very interesting reference point for compar- isons as the application has not changed over the years, not even in the voice call user interface. Nokia gives the “talk- time” and “stand-by time” for its phones in the product spec- i?cations, measured according to [1] or an earlier similar convention. This enables us to track the impacts of techno- logical changes over time.

Successful, forward-thinking illustrators no longer operate the way many did and still do, as merely colouring-in technicians, receiving briefs that are heavily directed and prescribed regarding content and overall visual concept. Nowadays, illustrators need to be educated, socially and culturally aware communicators, having knowledge, understanding and insight regarding the context within which they are working, the subject matter that they are engaged with, and to be able professionals working within the parameters and needs of the market place and target audiences.

The Fundamentals of Sonic Arts and Sound Design
AVA Publishing | 2007 | ISBN: 2940373493, 2940439966 | 176 pages | PDF | 50,5 MB
AVA Publishing | 2007 | ISBN: 2940373493, 2940439966 | 176 pages | PDF | 50,5 MB
This book introduces a subject that will be new to many: sonic arts. The application of sound to other media (such as film or video) is well known and the idea of sound as a medium in its own right (such as radio) is also widely accepted. However, the idea that sound could also be a distinct art form by itself is less well established and often misunderstood.
